In Field of Dreams, when Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) heard whispers in the wind, he took a leap of faith. He cleared out his crop to build a baseball diamond, clinging to a completely irrational belief that somehow things will work out in the end. Real life doesn’t work that way.

The price of rents is a hot issue in Toronto as there are very few vacancies these days. For those of us that live in big rental complexes, you know, those old tall buildings with an always absent superintendent and strangers loitering in the front lobby, there is a coalition of concerned citizens that has formed a simple and pointed campaign at reducing rents: Fair Tax Fair Rent

I believe that this proposal would work, and generally speaking I get excited when “concerned citizens” want to take control of such an important thing such as the price of rents, but there is a huge flaw in the proposal.

Postcard Elections

With Municipal elections here the media has focused its attention on what is turning out to be a close mayoral race, with no likable candidates. It is overshadowing the many battles for city councilors across Toronto wards, races that must be fought and won through pamphlets only. As far as politics go, pamphlets are the most thoughtful form of soliciting your vote. Using only a single piece of paper, candidates must employ tasteful design, efficient content and a nice picture of their faces to persuade you. Let’s examine the candidates in Ward 20 of the Trinity-Spadina riding to further analyze these postcard elections.

Taxi!

Torontonians are tolerant people, but ask them about taxi drivers and they will slap you in the face with their frustrations. I’m no different.

Epic Walk

[This is a piece from another blog and it has nothing to do with finance. I wrote it a year ago, and it’s still one of my favourites. Enjoy the final weekend of the summer.]

My sister and I are bad Muslims. It’s the month of Ramadan and we haven’t fasted once. Don’t get me wrong, we’re not bad people, just bad Muslims. Our parents, however, have taught us what Ramadan is all about – sacrifice. And so, on the last day of summer my sister and I set out to walk from downtown Toronto (queen and john) all the way to our parent’s place in Mississauga (like 401 and Mavis). That’s over 30km and it took us 7 hours. I’d like to share the highlights with you.
